Why Are My Dahua NVR and DVR Showing “Offline” Even Though My Internet Connection Is Working Fine—Here’s How I Fixed It

Why is Dahua NVR Offline But Internet Works

Dahua NVR status is offline but internet is working – I recently received a call from a fellow technician regarding a Dahua NVR that was showing an offline status despite the internet being working fine. He asked me to help resolve the issue by visiting the location in person. Upon arrival, I discovered an unexpected problem: the NVR was offline, but the internet was working fine.

This is my experience story to overcome the problem of Dahua NVR online status even though the internet at the location is working well.

Why Does a Dahua NVR Show Offline?

Dahua NVRs use peer-to-peer (P2P) connections to enable remote access via the DMSS and SmartPSS Lite apps. Based on common troubleshooting experiences, the NVR goes offline when it loses communication with the Dahua cloud server, even though the local network and internet connections on other devices are functioning properly. This usually indicates a connectivity issue between the recorder, router, and remote service, not a general internet outage.

Common causes include:

  • Incorrect DNS settings
  • Wrong gateway configuration
  • Disabled P2P service
  • IP address conflicts
  • Router or firewall restrictions
  • Outdated firmware
  • Incorrect date and time settings
  • Faulty network cable or router port

Checking if the Internet Connection at the Location is Working Well

To resolve this issue, I have already followed the steps listed above, but the Dahua NVR still shows an “offline” status.

To verify that the internet connection was working properly, I connected my laptop directly to the router using the same LAN cable that was connected to the Dahua NVR. I then changed the network settings on my laptop from a static IP address to DHCP. After doing so, I was able to access websites such as YouTube, CCTVManuals.com, and other online services without any issues.

However, when I reconnected the same LAN cable to the Dahua NVR, the device continued to display an offline status.

After conducting the test described above, I found that the internet connection from the main router was working fine and could provide internet access to other devices connected to the router, but the internet didn’t work when connected to the Dahua NVR. So I tried one last method, and it usually works.

Finally, I Found the Problem, and the Dahua NVR is Back Online

It took me about 30 minutes to identify the main reason why the Dahua NVR couldn’t go online. And the main reason was that the port on the main router wasn’t compatible with the NVR’s LAN port.

I encountered this problem when I added a hub.

During testing, I found that the Dahua NVR remained offline when connected directly to the ISP router or to an additional router using a TP-Link TL-WR840N. However, after inserting a TP-Link LS1005 network hub between the router and the NVR, the device immediately established an online connection. I previously observed similar behavior with a HiLook DVR installation.

Based on these results, the issue appears to be related to network link negotiation or compatibility between the recorder’s Ethernet interface and certain networking devices.

Although the exact cause may vary depending on the hardware and firmware versions involved, adding an intermediate hub or switch can sometimes help establish a stable connection by handling the communication between devices more effectively. If the NVR and DVR are still offline, check their IP address settings and make sure the devices are obtaining an IP address from the router. Also check that the LAN LED indicators on the hub and router are lit. However, if the LAN indicators are not lit, there is a concern that the LAN ports on the Dahua NVR and DVR may be damaged.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What Causes a Dahua NVR to Fail to Connect to the Internet?

Generally, the cause of a Dahua NVR showing an “offline” status is an incorrect network configuration on the NVR. In some cases, it is caused by the NVR’s LAN port not being supported by the router.

What Is a Dahua P2P NVR?

P2P stands for peer-to-peer. In an NVR system, P2P is a system that connects a Dahua NVR to the cloud so that the NVR can be accessed from anywhere.

How Do I Enable Dahua P2P NVR?

You can open the Dahua NVR settings to enable P2P.

Final Thoughts

So that is the source of the problem, you just need to add a hub between the NVR and the router.

Based on my experience, inserting a network hub between the router and the NVR resolved the offline issue immediately. If you encounter the same problem, first verify that the internet connection is working correctly by testing the network with a laptop or another device. If other devices can access the internet normally while the NVR remains offline, consider checking the NVR’s network settings or testing the connection through a hub or unmanaged switch. While this solution may not apply to every installation, it is a simple troubleshooting step that is worth trying.
