Basically, security cameras all serve the same purpose—monitoring and recording—and the only difference lies in their systems. What Is a WiFi Camera? How Does It Work?
The WiFi camera connects directly to the internet without a cable.
Even though it’s wireless, you’ll still need to set up a power source where the camera will be installed. WiFi cameras are typically powered by an adapter that plugs into an electrical outlet. There are also WiFi camera options that use batteries and solar panels. These can be installed without requiring a power source because the camera runs on batteries. WiFi cameras connect directly to your phone and don’t require a recorder like an NVR.

WiFi cameras are generally sold individually. I’d say there’s a wider variety of WiFi cameras compared to PoE cameras.
My Review of PoE Cameras and WiFi Cameras—Which Should You Choose?
First, I’ll explain about PoE cameras.
PoE cameras are ideal for use in almost any building, from hotels, hospitals, and private homes to large-scale locations such as coal mines and factories. PoE cameras offer more stable connectivity because they use a cable connection to the NVR. I have yet to come across a situation where more than two WiFi cameras were installed in a large area like those mentioned above, due to connectivity limitations.
PoE cameras cannot connect directly to WiFi, but they can still be connected to the internet using an Ethernet cable connected to a router.
Next, an explanation of WiFi cameras.
This camera can be connected directly to a smartphone and to WiFi. It does not require a recorder or a monitor. Generally, WiFi cameras use memory cards as their storage medium. The memory card is installed inside the camera. To view the camera’s live feed, users can access it from their smartphone using the app provided by the manufacturer.
WiFi cameras typically come with additional features such as alarms and human detection.
So if you need a security camera to monitor a large area, you can use a PoE camera, as it offers superior connectivity. Meanwhile, if you only need a camera to install at home and have a WiFi network available, you can choose a WiFi camera. In addition to being easy to install, WiFi cameras come with smart features such as motion detection and alarms, which are essential for home surveillance.
Can I Use a WiFi Camera and a PoE Camera Together in the Same Location?
A WiFi camera is actually a type of IP camera as well; the only difference is that it can connect directly to a WiFi network. Therefore, WiFi cameras can be used alongside PoE cameras.
One example is the EZVIZ camera.
I can connect an EZVIZ camera to a PoE camera system. However, this is contingent on there being available channels on the PoE network video recorder (NVR). Since EZVIZ cameras support ONVIF, you can connect them to any brand of NVR as long as that NVR also supports ONVIF. For your information, generally all NVR brands currently available on the market support ONVIF.
