No live view on Hikvision camera in browser – Are you seeing a “Please click here to download and install the plug-in. Close the browser when installing the plug-in” message or a blank screen when trying to access your Hikvision camera in Google Chrome? You’re not alone. This is a common issue caused by browser compatibility changes and outdated plugins.
In this guide, you will learn how to fix the issue of Hikvision camera not showing live view in web browser based on personal experience and hands-on practice.
Why Hikvision Live View Does Not Work in Chrome Browser?
Before fixing the problem, it’s important to understand the cause.
Modern browsers like Chrome no longer support the NPAPI plugin, which older Hikvision camera devices rely on for live viewing in a web browser. As a result, you may experience:
- Blank screen when opening the live view
- A message appears saying “Please install the plugin.”
- The live view doesn’t load at all.
Use Chrome Old Version 128.0.6613.138 (Official Build) (x86_64)
If you’re using macOS, you’ll need to download an older version of Chrome. Just follow the steps below.
Step 1 – Open the this link.

Step 2 – Scroll to the bottom and select Other Platforms.

Step 3 – Select Operating System and Version. We selected Operating System Mac and Version MacOS 10.15. This is the compatible version of Chrome and Hikvision devices.

Step 4 – Install Chrome browser like you would any other app on MacOS.
Install the IE Tab Extension in Google Chrome (Windows 10 or 11)
Another method we’ve tried that successfully resolved this issue is to install the IE Tab extension in Chrome. Just follow the steps below.
Step 1 – Open Chrome. Tap the three dots in the top right corner of Chrome. Select Extensions > Manage Extensions.

Step 2 – Tap Chrome Web Store.

Step 3 – Type “IE Tab” in the search box. Select IE Tab.

Step 4 – Add to Chrome.

Step 5 – Add Extension.

Step 6 – Tap the Sign In with Google or Email button.

Step 7 – Select Your IE Compatibility Mode. In this section, we’ll select IE (Internet Explorer) version 10.

Step 8 – Tap the play button to complete the setup.

Update Hikvision Camera, DVR and NVR Firmware
Older firmware versions may not support modern browsers, so updating the firmware can help resolve the issue. However, in some cases, a firmware update may not fix the problem.
If the browser is still not supported, you can try installing the IE Tab extension in Chrome as an alternative solution.
Use Hikvision Software Instead
If you don’t have enough time to try the guide above, to avoid browser issues entirely, use the official software. These tools provide a stable live view without plugin issues.

- Hik-Connect (mobile app)
Conclusion
The “no live view” issue on Hikvision cameras in Chrome is mostly caused by plugin incompatibility. Since Chrome no longer supports the required plugins, switching to an older version or using dedicated software is the best solution. By following my guide above, you can quickly restore live view and access your cameras without further issues.
