Once an Imou camera has been installed, customers often ask how to use it. A frequently asked question is: how do I view previous video recordings? The main reason people install CCTV cameras is to view stored video recordings, which may date from as recently as the previous day or as far back as a month ago. Imou cameras store recordings on a memory card fitted inside the camera.
In this article, I will explain in detail how to view live footage from an Imou camera directly within the app.
Viewing Imou Camera Footage on Your Mobile Phone
Video footage recorded by the Imou camera and stored on a memory card can be viewed using the app.
Imou cameras will store video recordings for a duration depending on the capacity of the memory card used. For example, if you are using a 32 GB memory card with a 2 MP camera, the memory card can store recordings for approximately 5–6 days in 24-hour recording mode. If you use motion-activated recording mode, the video storage duration is extended to around one month.
Therefore, ensure that the memory card capacity is suitable for the recording mode.
Requirements Before Using Playback
As playback takes place directly within the Imou app, the first thing you need to ensure is that you have an internet connection. Make sure the camera is connected to Wi-Fi and is online. On your mobile phone, you can use either a mobile data connection or the same Wi-Fi network.
You also have access to your Imou account.
How to View Imou Camera Footage from One Month Ago
To retain 30 days’ worth of camera footage, you’ll need to use a high-capacity memory card. Below are the steps I’ve managed to document for playback footage from an Imou camera.
Open the Imou Life app.

Log in using your registered account. If you’re already logged in, opening the app will take you directly to the app dashboard.
Tap on the CCTV camera.

You’ll then be directed to the CCTV camera’s live view page. Tap Playback to access the playback feature.

You’ll then be directed to the video recording playback page. Here, users can select the date and playback time for the video recording they’re looking for.

Why Can’t I Playback Footage from My Imou Camera?
If your Imou camera cannot play back footage, this does not necessarily mean that the camera is faulty.
Based on my experience to date as a CCTV camera technician, and having encountered this problem on numerous occasions, the main reason why Imou cameras cannot play back footage is that the memory card is faulty; the memory card is not suitable for CCTV cameras. Whilst CCTV memory cards may look the same as those used in mobile phones, they are designed for different purposes.
Therefore, you should buy CCTV cameras from a specialist CCTV equipment shop, rather than from a mobile phone shop. Most mobile phone shops only stock memory cards for mobile phones.
Conclusion
he Imou Life app makes it easy to review recorded videos anytime and anywhere using your smartphone. Whether you are checking motion events, monitoring your home while away, or looking for a specific incident, the Playback feature provides quick access to your saved recordings.
To enjoy a smooth playback experience, make sure your camera is connected to the internet, recording is enabled, and your storage option—such as a microSD card, cloud storage, or NVR—is working properly. Keeping the Imou Life app and your camera firmware up to date can also help improve performance and reduce playback issues. With the right setup and regular maintenance, the Imou Playback feature becomes a reliable tool for reviewing security footage whenever you need it, helping you keep your home or business protected with confidence.
