After returning from the Hikvision CCTV camera installation site at the coal mine, I forgot to set the NVR’s IP address to a static one. As a result, when the internet connection was lost, the NVR’s IP address reverted to its default setting. This also caused the IP cameras connected to the NVR to disappear from the screen. Finally, I returned to the mine site to set the Hikvision NVR’s IP address to a static one.
This is my experience with changing the IP address of a Hikvision NVR to a static address so that the camera connection doesn’t get disconnected anymore.
Why You Need to Change the IP Address?
There are several reasons why you might need to update the IP address of your Hikvision device. These include adapting to new network settings at your location, avoiding IP address conflicts, and ensuring the device connects to your router. However, for some of the reasons mentioned above, changing the IP address allows the device to connect to the internet.
There are three methods you can use to change the IP address on a Hikvision DVR/NVR, which we will discuss one by one:
- Via the on-screen menu
- Via the SADP Tool application
- Via a web browser by accessing the device’s IP address.
Some Methods I Use to Change the IP Address of a Hikvision NVR
There are several methods I use to change the IP address of a Hikvision NVR. You can follow any one of them. The method I use most often is via a web browser because it doesn’t require a monitor—all you need is a laptop at the location.
Preparation:
- A Hikvision DVR or NVR connected to your network
- A computer or laptop
- The device’s current IP address Admin username and password
- SADP Tool (optional but recommended) – Read how to install and download SADP Tool for laptop or PC.
Method 1: Change IP Address Using DVR/NVR Menu
Right click on the screen and select Menu.

Log in to the DVR/NVR using your username and password. Or log in using your pattern lock.

Select Configuration.

Select Network > General

Move the toggle switch for DHCP (IP4) to Off. Then, enter the IP address as needed. Tap the Apply button to save the settings.

Method 2: Change IP Address Using SADP Tool
Open SADP Tool on your PC or laptop.

It will automatically detect Hikvision devices on your network. Select your DVR/NVR from the list.

Change IP address.

Enter the admin password, then click the “Modify” button to save the settings. If the “Parameters Modification Completed” notification appears, the IP address has been successfully updated.

Method 3: Change IP Address via Web Browser
Open a web browser.
Enter the current DVR/NVR IP address. In this guide, the current IP address is 192.168.1.13.

Log in to the web interface using the previously created username and password.

Go to Configuration > Network > Basic Settings.

Disable DHCP.

Enter the new IP address as needed and tap the Save button to save the settings.

Static vs DHCP: Which One Should You Use?
It’s important to understand that changing the IP address automatically changes the DVR/NVR’s IP address to static. So, which is most recommended? Here’s the difference between static IP and DHCP.
Static IP (Recommended)
- Fixed IP address
- Better for remote access and port forwarding
- Prevents IP conflicts
DHCP
- Automatically assigned by router
- Easier setup
- May change over time
Troubleshooting: Cannot Access Device After Changing IP
Some device owners have tried changing their IP address and encountered the issue of their device being inaccessible. If you’re experiencing the same issue, try these steps:
Check Network Range
- Ensure the new IP is in the same subnet as your router
Verify IP Address
- Double-check for typing errors
Restart Device
- Restart the DVR/NVR after changing the IP address.
Use SADP Tool
- You may be accessing the wrong IP address. Scan your network to find the correct IP address.
Conclusion
Changing the IP address on a Hikvision DVR/NVR is a simple yet crucial step in network configuration. Whether you use the device menu, the SADP Tool, or a web browser, the process is easy if you follow our instructions. This guide is based on our own hands-on experience, not just copied or pasted from other sources, so it’s straightforward to follow.
